German New Medecine and the Emotion/Disease Connection

Many people ask me to explain German New Medecine (GNM) more deeply so I put together this blog series as a sort of mini course on GNM. I hope you enjoy reading it and that it is helpful to you.

GNM is based on thousands of case studies that show how extended periods of stress that consume a person, can lead to physical symptoms of varying degrees. The nature of the stress corresponds to different parts of the brain as well as different systems and organs in the body. For example, if a person feels powerless and remains “stuck” in this emotional state, their muscular system may begin to manifest symptoms. Why the muscular system? Because our muscles play a huge role in our ability to move and feel strong, therefore if we feel powerless, our brain ends up manifesting this in the body as a mirror of how the person feels. The brain does not know the difference between what is real or imagined, and so repetitive thoughts and beliefs become real. Another example, can be a person who continuously devalues themselves or feels worthless, may experience symptoms in their bones, tendons, ligaments and articulations because bones represent our ability to stand up straight, and our sense of self worth. There are about 8 different systems in the body that can be affected by our emotional and mental state such as the respiratory system, hormonal system, cardiovascular system etc..

We hear more and more doctors acknowledging the connection between stress and disease, GNM allows us to go further into the specific nature of the stress and sees the body as a reflection of the person’s unresolved stressors. The body speaks and shows us what to bring our attention to and find solutions for.

We all live minor and major stressors throughout our lives, that is not the issue. The trouble begins when we don’t find a way out of the emotions these stressful events bring up and we continue to ruminate and be consumed by these thoughts and emotions for prolonged periods of time. Eventually, because the brain is wired for survival and always trying to restore balance, it will find a way to free up some space so that the person can return to some level of peace within. The brain does this by compartmentalizing the stressor into one area of the brain (this has been visible and documented in scans) and then sends a command to the body which will then manifest the symptom in an area of the body that is associated with the nature of the stress, This may all sound a little complicated, but it will all come together as you continue to learn more on the subject in my next blog posts.

You may even be wondering what the point of knowing all this is…. Well, the best part about knowing how disease develops is that it can allow us to take preventative measures and to avoid having to deal with recurrent or more severe illnesses. This is not to say that we have control over every bit of what happens in our lives, nor is this about blaming or shaming ourselves. It is meant to empower us to do what we can in order to take charge of our health and to prevent disease. There is a bio-logical process and nothing is random or bad luck. When it feels challenging to restore peace on our own, there are always resources to help us process our thoughts and emotions and release the associated stress on our minds and bodies. Our well being and our inner peace should always take precedence over stress. The events that trigger us most can also carry a charge stored through generational imprints or memories we carry and from our childhood. This is why one person may react to something with anger while the other may react with sadness or not at all. With GNM, as well as with Holistic Kinesiology, we explore these programs and allow the person to choose a new way of living. This approach can also be used for behavioural symptoms in both children and adults.

In the case where symptoms are already present, GNM can help in the healing process and it is always the perfect time to begin bringing awareness and transformation. Your physical, emotional, mental, spiritual and energetic parts never cease to be connected and can still benefit from the understanding and change that self awareness brings. Healing is never guaranteed but has been observed in my own personal experience and others who have taken this approach. GNM practitioners do not interfere with any medical treatments, and we can never exerce any power over a person’s decisions in terms of the medical treatments they choose, however, this can be greatly complimentary in all situations.

This is Part 1 of a series of posts on GNM that I will be sharing in the coming days/weeks. In part 2, I will share more about how the duration and degree of stress, corresponds to different degrees of symptoms, the different systems and their emotional significance and much more.
